11:55 pm - Newbie
Name: Kara
Explanation of your username: This may take a little while. I went to see Spiderman (1) on opening night with my boyfriend. On the walk back from the theatre to our dorms, we were discussing what sort of animal superhero we'd like to be named after. I was thereby deemed Kara, the super penguin of justice. My superpowers were waddling, sliding on the ice on my belly, and not flying really well. So that's the penguin part.
I have a good friend named Timmy who adds the word -face to the end of everyone's name. So I am Karaface, and he's Timmyface, etc. Super penguin o' justice + -face = penguinface.
Describe yourself in five words: silly, loyal, loving, goofy, kind
Where do you live?: Bronx NY until May '05
Why do you want to join this community?:
I like to think I'm good at SOMETHING (probably not the best).
I want to use my livejournal more than just to stalk people.
I want to be accepted.
I want to make people laugh.
I want to reject stupid people.
Five favorite books: The Source by James Michener, Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, The Great Gatsby (also) by F. Scott Fitzgerald, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby
Five favorite movies: Casablanca, Best in Show, Help!, Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy, Lilo & Stitch
Five favorite songs: "Spiraling Shape" - TMBG, "Something" - Beatles, "As We Go Along" - The Monkees, "There's Always Someone Cooler Than You" - Ben Folds, "Kite" - U2
Favorite quote: "Don't quit just before the miracle." - Peter Tork
Who is your hero?: I don't really have a hero, to be honest. I would say Dorothea Dix, but I don't believe in total institutionalization of the mentally ill. She does seem the closest to a hero, career-wise (I'm going to pursue graduate work in community public health), but I want to pave my own way.
If you had three wishes, what would they be?:
1. Federally-funded uniform healthcare for everyone
2. Competent world leaders who are willing to engage in productive discourse with one another
3. The return of iBook SE - the pretty colored iBooks with the handles (I'm looking for a used one now)
What is your theme song?: "Yeh Yeh" by TMBG
If you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do?: Spend all of my money on a big party with all the people I love, and just have a great time
What does DNA stand for? (if you don’t know, just say so. If you cheat, you don’t belong here.): Deoxyribonucleic Acid (I'm dating a molecular biologist - does that count as cheating? :) )
I’m thinking of a number between one and ten: 3!!! 3!!
If you could change your appearance, would you? That depends. I would NEVER have cosmetic surgery, but if I could wave a magic wand and be a few inches taller and a few pounds lighter, why not? I'm very happy with the rest of my life as is right now, but I tend to be a bit insecure about my appearance.

What are your views on:
Abortion: I am adopted, and therefore VERY pro-life. I think about all that I've accomplished and all that I aspire to do with my life, and then I think about all that would have been wasted (not to appear cocky or anything) if I hadn't been born. I could never condone the murder of a human life that could grow into something wonderful and great, with limitless possibilities. I have met so many wonderful people, and had so many incredible opportunities, and so many more to come. All that being said, I also believe that when two people engage in a sexual relationship, they should be responsible enough to understand what they are doing. No form of sex is 100% safe sex, and if a couple isn't prepared to deal with the consequences of that 1 or 2% chance, then they shouldn't be having sex. I see too many people (even at my age (20) when they should know better) using abortions or the morning-after pill as a form of birth control, when that is not the way it should be. I don't approve of Bush's bringing in ethics and religious values to the political scene, but I support his pro-life beliefs.

Homosexuality: I am SO SO optimistic for the future of homosexuals in America and around the world. I support gay marriage and the rights of homosexual couples; however, I don't believe that the world is prepared for legal gay marriages yet. I wish the world were more tolerant and that homosexual love could be accepted as mainstream. I wish that adopted children of homosexual parents didn't have to deal with the incredible stigma they face today (similar to the children of interracial marriages in the past). I have huge problems with people who believe that people "choose" to be gay - why would someone choose a lifestyle that promises them ridicule, social discrimination, and stigma for (possibly) the rest of their lives? I hope that genetic data comes out soon supporting the genetic basis of homosexuality, to silence some of the ignorant gay-bashers.

The war in Iraq: I support the troops in Iraq. I think that the most demoralizing thing in the world would be to be thousands of miles from home, knowing that the people at home aren't supporting you. I don't want this war to be another Vietnam. I am sick and tired of all the Bush-bashing that is so rampant in the media - enough already! In regards to the war, however, I (like many Americans) don't see a clear reason why we entered the war in the first place, and therefore cannot be entirely supportive of the cause. I can support the people fighting, and pray for their families and for their safe return home as soon as possible.

Gay rights: See my answer to the "homosexuality" question above.

“Titanic”: I went on my first date to see this movie. I like Leo and Kate as performers (Catch Me if You Can, Eternal Sunshine, Growing Pains, etc.), but I (as a 14 year old when this movie came out) was sick of this movie before it ever came out. I forget what it was nominated against in the Oscars, but I remember being very upset when it won almost everything. LOTR: ROTK was not only a groundbreaking film, it was also an incredibly well-acted and directed story that did justice to the book (although it did cut out the entire scouring of the shire part). It deserved all the honors it received. Titanic, on the other hand, only won Oscars because it was groundbreaking. It was a big-budget, awe-inspiring film that had nothing else behind it.
Current Mood: optimisticoptimistic
Current Music: the NEW TMBG album, The Spine!
